It was totally inappropriate to evict the Cub Scout, but it was equally inappropriate of his mother to set him up as she did. The questions very obviously reflected her "concerns", not his.

And her concerns are both conventionally "liberal" and conventionally ignorant in that the core one presumes a priori that "commonsense gun control" is common-sensical, effective, and not an illegitimate infringement on the basic human right of self-defense.

The reality is that it is just plain not possible to stop mass killings by taking away access to guns. We know that because (a) mass killings pre-date guns, and are committed by means other than guns even today; and (b) mass killings are committed by people who have lost their minds and, in acting out, are trying to save their own lives either literally or figuratively.

Implementing her "commonsense gun control" would not have prevented the sniper's psychosis (or Lanza's, or the cinema shooter's, or the political-rally shooter's, or the engineering-school shooters, or....), it would only have changed his methodology to, e.g., home-made napalm or white-phosphorus bombs, or poison darts delivered by blowpipe or home-made blackpowder bomb (there are a number of highly toxic plants growing wild from which deadly poisons can be easily extracted in a kitchen), or some other method.

If we seriously want to stop mass killings, we must take into care under public-health law those persons who are at significant risk of acting out by committing a mass killing. Such individuals have a psychotic degree of paranoia or paranoid schizophrenia, and their condition is usually diagnosable by a trained person, sometimes merely by visual observation and pretty much always by clinical interview.

If we continue to focus on guns rather than the real cause, it should be obvious that the real motive is citizen disarmament for the benefit of the ruling class, not the prevention of mass killings.
